This article discusses the book "My Mission to Spain," by Claude G. Bowers. Bowers a passionate veteran liberal and historian, as well as one of the leading democratic politicians has done a service, in revealing the inner agonies leading to the tragic demise of the short-lived constitutional Spanish republic. His book fills in a corner of this epoch by presenting the views of a completely dedicated democrat who saw most clearly that the Spanish civil war was merely the rehearsal for World War II.
