New Republic;8/10/53, Vol. 129 Issue 2, p18
The article discusses the book The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, by Ernest Jones. Ernest Jones' book succeeds in making neurologist Sigmund Freud human without making him any the less great; indeed, as readers learn through this remarkable biography to understand better the quality of Freud's day-to-day life, his intellectual achievement stands out as all the more astonishing. Ernest Jones, far better than any other biographers, has shown how from the quite un-sunny beginnings developed Freud's historic break-through into a new understanding of man, along with a new understanding and new control of himself.
