The article presents a discussion on the book "Henry Adams: Scientific Historian," by William Jordy. It undertakes to dispose of Henry Adams as a scientist whom no one takes seriously. What Adams practices is not science but nescience. His incapacity rested upon his ability to comprehend that science is not a body of knowledge, but a method of inquiry. Adams is still elaborating his theory of the degradation of energy, when the second law of thermo-dynamics is already becoming suspect as regards its universality.
