ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the 1953 Brandeis Festival that took "The Comic Spirit" as its theme, and while the big ideas tended to diminish, in performance the feature attractions were sufficiently experimental to justify the approval of a buoyant audience. "The Comic Spirit" was meant to have behind it some Meredithian notion of laughter as a liberating social corrective, but freedom from fear was hardly exemplified by the highly prepared efforts of S.J. Perelman and others, during a "Survey of Comic Techniques." Louis Kronenberger's all too artificial comedy, "The International Set," was also disappointing.
