ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the book "El Campesino: Life and Death in Soviet Russia." Campesino, the book's protagonist, was the most brutal of the Spanish Loyalist generals and the most uncontrollable. He survived to recognize and reject the police state which adopted him. The Russians tried to fit him out as an international commander in a world-conquering Red Army. He wanted to start over as a guerrilla fighter in the slums of Madrid, Spain. His downfall was slow, since his reputation was high. A residual tenderness remained among Red Army officers but failed to keep him from the torture cells.
