ABSTRACT
This article focuses on two books "Who Walk in Darkness," by Chandler Brossard and "Friends and Vague Lovers," by Jack Dunphy. Dunphy's novel is about an international homosexual set on an island off the coast of Italy. As in the worst cases of novels dealing with Jewish, Negro or proletarian themes, the special group, is presented in complete isolation from humanity. Brossard's novel is about the "hip." A novel about hipsters is something new; but when they are presented in a style as derivative as this, nothing new emerges, and what was meant to be discovery comes through as repetition.
