ABSTRACT
The article discusses the life and works of Giuseppe Pella, a competent, cultivated statesman and head of the government of Italian Republic. This Italian premier is the living symbol and example of those changes in social practices and prejudices that the enormous generosity of the Americans has not yet achieved. At the cost of great sacrifices, Pella found the means and the time to get some ele- mentary schooling. In September, 1946, on behalf of the Christian Democratic Party, he successfully acted as umpire in a serious quarrel between supporters in the government of free enterprise and backers of a planned economy. Pella was made an under-secretary in the cabinet, then the Minister of Finance. Since then Pella has served as Italy's representative on many international committees, and has won not only a world reputation but also skill in dealing with world problems.
