ABSTRACT
This article discusses the book "The Loneliness at the Core," by Hugh Holman. It is a frankly autobiographical book, a story of the buried life, written by a man who, by his own confession, failed to finish a single book of Henry James. Yet its whole existence has been during a time when the technical and formal considerations of Henry James have triumphantly established themselves as the proper criteria for fiction. For a book largely devoid of the traditional fictional or dramatic structure, almost naively innocent of crucial plot and seemingly dedicated to the lyrical expression of emotion not very tranquilly recollected, the age of Jamesian criticism has proved patronizingly hostile.
