The article focuses on the efforts of retailers Valdak Corp. and Grand Folks, North Dakota-based company, to take general merchandise section to another level in the convenience store industry. At Valdak Corp.'s seven Valley Dairy stores, customers walk into a combination c-store/gift shop, featuring a variety of products found at upscale card and gift stores. For several years, Grand Folks carried wildlife statues and other figurines and novelty items, but in late fall of 2003, it began adding products to create a unique gift area. Set up on glass shelves in Valley Dairy stores are figurines like Coots and Biddys, which is one of the top selling whimsical lines in the country.
