A Scientist's Dilemma

Engle, Paul
February 1955
New Republic;2/21/55, Vol. 132 Issue 8, p18
The article focuses on the book "The Hound of Earth," by Vance Bourjaily. One of the strongest forces in the novel is that all of the action is set over against the bizarre rush of Christmas business. The characters in the store are amusingly and convincingly drawn: the hard-faced Dolly, a Lesbian who kills herself by drinking strychnine in warm milk from a nursing bottle, after having been discovered in her violation of a salesgirl at her counter; the hearty Finn, who runs the toy department as if it were an athletic contest.
