Power system on silicon provides small footprint and low BOM cost

The article focuses on iPower System on Silicon, or power system on a chip from Enpirion Inc. The system is designed to convert common voltage rails to a lower voltage with precise regulation and improved transient response using distributed power architecture. Non-isolated dc-dc conversion is achieved via advanced circuit techniques, ultra-high switching frequency, and high-density IC and micro-electromechanical systems technology. Only three external components are required to operate the converter including small value input and output capacitors and a softstart capacitor. The device's 5-megahertz operating frequency enables the use of small-sized output capacitors. The power supply has several protection features, including over-current protection to protect the IC from excessive load current, thermal shutdown to turn off the converter when the IC gets to hot, over-voltage protection that stops the PWM switching and turns on the lower MOSFET at 120 percent of the programmed output voltage and an under-voltage lockout circuit to disable the converter output when the input voltage is less than 2.2 Volts.
