ABSTRACT
The article discusses the books "Era of the Oath: Northern Loyalty Tests During the Civil War and Reconstruction," by Harold Melvin Hyman and Red Scare: A Study in National Hysteria, 1919-1920," by Robert K. Murray. Both books are studies of aspects of the security problem at various points of the United States' past. "Era of the Oath," deals with loyalty oaths during the Civil War and Reconstruction. "Red Scare's" emotionalism operates within a framework of assumptions and prejudices that have come to be known as "ritualistic liberalism."
