ABSTRACT
This article focuses on four novels: "The Consul's Wife," by William L. Shirer; "Some Inner Fury," by Kamala Markandaya; "Ten Days in August," by Bernard Frizell; "All Honorable Men," by David Karp. These four novels have little in common; although two are pre-occupied with violence in India, and two, not the same two, are written by newsmen, and all four are more or less serious, meaningful similarities do not extend much further. Shirer's novel is is a political melodrama with humanistic overtones, set in the British-ruled, strife-torn Indian state of "Pawancore." A more successful attempt to deal with the violent side of Indian resistance is Kamala Markandaya's second novel, "Some inner Fury."
