ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the book "The Selected Letters of Henry James," edited by Leon Edel. Edel has produced this book of a different kind and intention. Drawing on a huge stock of material to which Percy Lubbock did not have access; drawing also on his own unrivalled knowledge of James' life, travels, business dealings, and working methods, all of which he has already shown in his Jamesian scholarship and in "The Untried Years," the first volume of his biography, he has assembled not so much a record of James' career as an index of his personality and mind.
