ABSTRACT
The article focuses on issues related to videoconferencing over IP (Internet Protocol). Much less heralded in the media, but certainly as significant from a business application perspective, has been the steady growth of video over IP. The proliferation of IP networks has been the main driver for both quality improvements and cost savings in video, and has forced service providers and equipment vendors to pay more than just lip service to their ability to deliver video. According to market data from Wainhouse Research, most companies using ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Networks) are happy with a 92-94 percent success rate, while those using video over IP often achieve a greater than 99 percent success rate. But video comes with its own set of unique needs and requirements above and beyond the needs of data and even voice networks. A new vibrant market dedicated to making video a useful enterprise tool has grown up seemingly overnight with IP video, even though video conferencing as a communications tool has been around for more than a decade.
