ABSTRACT
The article presents information on five important members of the neurotransmitter orchestra. Serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are often referred to as "The Big Three." All these neurotransmitters are monoamines and are often converted back and forth to one another. Others that are also involved in response to stress are composed of very different chemicals including glutamate and GABA. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and blocks the effects of excitatory agents that cause anxiety. Depressed individuals have low levels of both GABA and serotonin in their spinal fluid.
