ABSTRACT
This section presents news briefs on the computer industry in the U.S. as of September 2004. Sybase released a free, limited version of its software for deployment on Linux systems. Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise Express Edition for Linux is free for both development and production use, though it is limited to one central processing unit, 2 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory, and 5GB of total data storage. Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) announced a new enterprise storage lineup with new features such as a virtualization, which allows customers to manage as much as 32 petabytes of internal and external storage. The new storage system, TagmaStore Universal Storage Platform, is the first upgrade to the high-end Lightning of HDS since 2000. Macromedia is offering its Breeze Live hosted Web conferencing service on a pay-as-you go basis instead of requiring a subscription. Users are now able to access the Pay-Per-Use Breeze Live service for 32 cents per minute per participant and to use a credit card for payments. The company hopes to extend the application to small and midsize businesses.
