ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the book "A House of Children," by Joyce Cary. In this book the author speaks of himself when he was young. He has produced a sensitive and tenderly humorous memoir that is alive with the spirit of childhood. Born into a leisurely, fin de siécle British milieu, Cary spent a boyhood crammed with picnics, sails, shoots, walks, cart-rides, sea-bathes, pranks, parties, doting relatives, rambling country houses, and devoted servants who loved children. He has unpretentiously evoked this life in a series of vignettes--almost like a childhood snapshot album--in which, as Evelyn Corner glides among his memories with easy grace, recounting incidents and recording impressions with a child's simplicity and directness, perceiving the whole through a fine screen of adult insight and reflection.
