ABSTRACT
The nonlinear stability of the motionless state of a binary fluid mixture heated and salted from below, in the Oberbeck-Boussinesq scheme, for stress-free and rigid-rigid boundary conditions and Schmidt numbers PC greater than Prandtl numbers PT , is studied in the region around the bifurcation point &scriptC;02 = &scriptR;B2 (PT +1)/[PT (p-1)] of linear instability. An improvement of the results in Mulone [11] is found for small values of p = PC/PT and PT. For p suf.ciently large the critical nonlinear Rayleigh number is very close to the linear one (with relative difference less than 1% in the sea water case)

We use a four-dimensional variational data assimilation (4D-VAR) algorithm to observe the growth of 2-D plumes from a point heat source. In order to test the predictability of the 4D-VAR technique for 2-D plumes, we perturb the initial conditions and compare the resulting predictions to the...

We consider Rayleigh-Bénard convection as modelled by the Boussinesq equations in the infinite-Prandtl-number limit. We are interested in the scaling of the average upward heat transport, the Nusselt number Nu, in terms of the non-dimensionalized temperature forcing, the Rayleigh number Ra....

Stability of a flat layer with a free boundary in the model of microconvection is studied in the linear approximation of equilibrium. The most important physical case is considered, where the Boussinesq parameter and the Rayleigh number depend linearly on the Marangoni number. It is shown that...
