ABSTRACT
This section introduces the articles featured in the August 2004 issue of the Society for the Study of Labour History. The Special Issue explores key features of working-class masculinities mainly in the twentieth century and tracks some directions from which challenges may have come. It aims to open up an important research area in labor history. This Special Issue will demonstrate the central contributions that labor historians can make to an area of work that, so far, has been monopolized largely by psychologists, sociologists and scholars from cultural studies, who concentrate on issues around gender, sexuality and representation. The first two articles explore masculinities in different local worlds of work. Ronnie Johnston and Arthur Mclvor investigate the Clydeside heavy industries, i.e. coal, construction, metal work and shipbuilding, from the 1930s to the 1970s, and highlight the tragic contradiction that the workplace both forges hard man masculinity and, at the same time, breaks it down with industrial injuries and disease, making sufferers feel emasculated. Pat Ayers switches the spotlight to post-war Merseyside in a changed industrial situation where dock work has been decasualized and Ford factories with assembly line production have made their appearance.
