This article features several scanners. In the realm of document management, the means by which the physical document or image is entered into the virtual world of the computer is the scanner. The scanner that may be needed for entering ordinary paperwork, the occasional technical drawing--provided it is not too large--and a color image or two costs under a couple of hundred pounds. With the benefit of the USB 2.0 connection, scanning speeds can be delivered to the computer without slowing down. Canon's CanoScan 5200F model scans both documents and film with a 2400 x 4800 dots per inch resolution and reasonable 48-bit color depth for accurate color reproduction. Epson's Perfection 4870 Photo model has an optical resolution of 4800 x 9600 dots per inch--the highest in its class apparently--which allows a 35mm piece of film to be enlarged to 60cm x 80cm A1. Epson's Perfection 4870 has a Dmax level of 3.8, as does its 10000XL because it is a heavier duty A3+ system aimed at reprographics applications. There is a de-facto standard feature one should look for in a scanner--ISIS. This is a device driver developed for use with document scanners by a company called Pixel Translations.
