ABSTRACT
This article reports that six Toyota RAV4 automobiles have joined East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), following a successful year-long trial as of August 2004. The automobiles will be among 40 Fast Response Vehicles (FRV) in the service's 490 strong fleet, operated by paramedics and carrying a full range of emergency equipment. Replacing Renault Scenics and Ford Mondeos, this is the first time that Toyota has been represented in the mixed EMAS fleet. The vehicles were purchased from Inchcape Nottingham and converted by Woodway Engineering. They are expected to operate for five years before replacement. Bluelight Blueprint is a scheme designed to develop bespoke marked cars for the emergency services. Its aim is to ensure that official requirements for reliability, performance and safety can be met at the lowest possible outlay. Toyota Fleet has highlighted the frontline potential of the RAV4, as well as its Land Cruiser and mid-range Avensis vehicles, as part of the programme. The 2.0 litre petrol powered RAV4 with manual transmission offers users 147 brake horsepower, a maximum speed of 115 miles per hour, acceleration to 62 miles per hour in 10.6 seconds and combined cycle fuel economy of 32.5 miles per gallon with emissions of 207g/km.
