ABSTRACT
Several surveys conducted by different companies found that more than half the respondents were either currently outsourcing some aspect of their network operations or considering doing so in the next 12 months. They also found that 34 percent of the respondents were currently using a managed service for data, voice, security or storage, and another 24 percent were considering using a managed service in the next 12 months. Nearly every other industry survey since then has verified their results, and other market indicators suggest that the outsourcing market overall and managed services in particular are growing rapidly. Recent market forecasts also project significant growth in the managed services industry. For instance, Gartner expects more than half of enterprises will outsource the operation and management of premises network infrastructure by 2005. The truth is that the managed services business isn't new, but there is still plenty of confusion among enterprises regarding their managed service options, and frustration among carriers about how to make their managed services profitable.
