ABSTRACT
During February 2004 alone, Goodlettsville, Tennessee based Dollar General opened 119 new stores, and plans to open 675 in total before the end of the year. According to George Mahoney, there are a number of factors that allow dollar stores to expand at such a rapid pace, including low operational costs and location flexibility. Dollar General announced plans to install cooler doors in approximately 3,500 stores during 2004, including new stores, and Family Dollar is testing the concept in several markets. Dollar stores also build distribution centers near their stores to house their inventory and keep transportation costs down. INSET: DIPPING INTO THE DOLLAR.
