In this study, the authors compare the financial characteristics of French, German, and British firms in three major manufacturing industries with financial ratio averages for the 1997-2001 period. It is noted that financial ratios are widely used in financial comparisons and they can reveal the relative strengths and weaknesses of companies in the same industry. The authors examine the relative strengths and weaknesses of French, German, and British firms in terms of liquidity, asset management, financial leverage, profitability, and risk.
