A competitive market environment in which electronic devices are ubiquitous and commoditized is bringing new importance to the role of enclosures or housings. Once an afterthought, enclosure design has evolved into a key method to differentiate portable devices, giving original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a sustainable competitive advantage through enhanced functionality and aesthetics. Many OEMs have already begun to increase the role of enclosures in branding and marketing. Shape is the way manufacturers differentiate, as box-like shapes are being replaced by sleek ergonomic designs. Upcoming generations of enclosures will bring a wealth of tactile and visual options for the consumer to connect with.
