ABSTRACT
At some point, most people will come into contact with the Land Registry. Despite this, it is one of the less well-known government departments, largely because dealings with it are generally handled through solicitors, mortgage lenders and the other myriad parties that are involved when buying or selling property. The Registry is moving into the 21st century, and is committed to using modern technology to make its operations more efficient and more accessible to the general public. The Act changed a number of the procedures that govern how work is carried out at the Registry. To deal with these reforms, the IT systems that the Land Registry's employees use also had to be altered, creating a training need to bring operational staff up to speed with both the new procedures and the IT systems supporting them. The core Land Registry IT system is based around an IBM mainframe, networked out to 24 regional offices. "It supports a variety of applications because it has been developed over a near 20-year period," says Graham Woodward, the training manager at the education and training unit. At the heart of the system is the largest property database in Europe containing some 80 million records. INSET: Profile.
