The article focuses on web portals. As the Web has matured, portals have rapidly become the new center of activity for Internet business applications. Consumers or employees may regularly access portals belonging to travel agencies, health care providers, insurers, book or music sales, and well-known brands such as Yahoo without even being completely aware of the portals or their operation. However, as portals have been augmented and enhanced to take on this growing number of differing roles, their complexity has naturally increased. A portal provides a single, personalized access point to a variety of information and services. It aggregates and integrates resources, thereby opening up a window to selected background business processes. Drilling down a bit, portals are packaged in a number of different ways. They can be bundled with myriad supporting applications, or deployed as a relatively simple standalone server. J2EE is a powerful platform for the delivery of interactive web applications, in its "vanilla form" it is not entirely suited to meeting the demands of modern portel development.
