ABSTRACT
The article presents information on top five paintings sold at an auction. Tongues wag about artist Pablo Picasso's $104 million record. Originally purchased for $30,000 in 1950 by John Whitney, it was painted when Picasso was 24 and had just arrived in Paris. Another painting Pierre-Auguste Renoir," Au Moulin de la Galette," 1876. Ryoei Saito spent $78.1 million in 1990 to buy this key Impressionist gem of a joyous French party from Whitney's collection. Originally thought to be the work of Jan van den Hoecke, a Sotheby's expert verified its authenticity only weeks before the painting sold. The painting of a clean shaven Vincent was painted for his mother's birthday before he took his life in 1890.
