ABSTRACT
In early March 2004, a group of West Midland members of the Institute of Management Services arrived in Malvern, England for a visit to the Morgan Motor Company's factory. They signed in at reception and were issued with a map of the factory showing the route of the tour. Unusual for a factory visit, nobody from Morgan accompanied them. They were free to follow the route at their own pace. Leaving reception, they proceeded across the courtyard and into the dispatch department. This contained 25 cars ready for delivery to customers. They proceeded through a small wooden door into the Chassis Erecting Shop. The build process then unfolds through the New assembly shop, sheet metal shop, and body shop. The tour does not follow a logical route, so cars were not seen built in order as would be found on a production line. The route then goes back across the main yard into the wing department. As the name suggests this is where the wings are attached. This is followed by the wiring shop and trim area. Final finish and test is the last area on the tour. This is a new addition to the factory, being a large steel framed unit. Interestingly, on the staff noticeboard was a notice from the managing director stating that production must be 15 cars a week although there was no indication whether this figure is being met. At the conclusion of the tour, the members returned their visitor badges to reception and picked up a brochure.
