Producing effective entry-level administrators is a challenge for any university leadership program. In Texas this challenge can be compounded by working with administrative interns who work in Windham School District, which serves the vast educational needs of the Texas prison system. Although classes take place in a nontraditional setting, the structure of the system is identical to all Texas public schools. Thus, all personnel must have the same certification and credentials as professionals in any other Texas school district, including principal and superintendent certifications. How, then, can the administrative internship utilized in the prison school system be developed as a useful tool, one in which interns actually learn and develop the essential skills for becoming a practicing administrator? This article offers an overview of the Windham School District and the way in which Sam Houston State University effectively implements its administrative internship program within this unique educational environment.
