ABSTRACT

A forced migration to SAP meant that Castle Cement had to find a way to teach employees who couldn't turn on a PC to use an advanced ERP system. The cement industry is under just as much pressure as any other manufacturing business, and companies are turning to the same complex enterprise IT systems that are used in factories the world over to get a commercial edge. The problem, from a training perspective, is that the employees who have to use these enterprise resource planning systems are for the most part not that technology savvy. Sheila Rous, SAP support analyst at Castle, says that, at the time, moving to SAP seemed a bit daunting but, in retrospect, it was a good choice. Responsibility for the project was given to a small team of Castle employees, including Rous, who were pulled from their previous jobs and charged with implementing SAP. The first stage was to customize the system so that it could meet Castle's needs. This task was complicated by the fact that the SAP server and licenses are held in Belgium by another Heidelberg company, CBR. Castle's team worked with CBR to customize the system to suit its needs.
