ABSTRACT

Within a month of your reading this, the European Union will have welcomed ten new member states, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovak Republic and Slovenia. But there will be an impact. Somewhere in sales or marketing department, someone is running a spreadsheet showing what they're going to be selling into the ten new EU states, even if some of the territories have a zero. The single market makes it easier for us to go into these territories, and all the analyses show that the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland are the main ones, and therefore there is an opportunity to sell more of whatever you're producing. The new countries certainly represent a great opportunity for IT companies. There is a huge opportunity for telecoms, and value-added broadband services are the key to generating more revenue from fixed phone lines in countries about to join the EU. This will spawn a huge demand for all aspects of security. The new entrants all have low labor costs, and low labor costs equal outsourcing.
