The article presents information on commercialized prostitution. Commercialized prostitution is viewed as a disorganization associated with urbanism and population changes. The purpose of this study is to explore commercialized prostitution in rural Okinawa in an attempt to contribute to a sharper isolation of those factors which facilitates its emergence. The author was stationed as an enlisted man in Okinawa for four months in 1954. Here he learned during preliminary interviews in the latter community, that its council had banned prostitution from the village by decreeing expulsion from the community of any person who maintained a prostitute within his or her household, or who rented a house or room to a prostitute. Commercialized prostitution is neither new to Okinawa nor a result of contact with the United States. Its existence covers a relatively long period of time. Prior to World War II prostitution in Okinawa was primarily confined to one licensed quarter of the city of Naha, where, it is estimated, there were between 2,000 and 4,000 prostitutes.
