Ipsos BookTrends found the year 2003 was a good year for the children's publishing market, but the demand for children's books did not keep pace with spending. Total consumer spending grew to $2.1 billion, up approximately 11% from 2002 levels. Per book spending also increased and overall spending for the year was led by a strong fourth quarter. However, children's publishers generated unit gains of just over 2% over the same period last year. Ipsos BookTrends also noted the customer base still appears to be shrinking, with 33% of households in 2003 buying at least one book for someone under the age of 14, compared to 35% in 2002.
