ABSTRACT
If "efficiency" and "business alignment" have achieved the importance of "peace for information technology (IT) organizations, then, beyond those important concepts, there's so little clarity on real, tangible objectives. Here, "business alignment" has come to mean "alignment with business services" and, more specifically, with enterprise applications--whether these are SAP, email or just surfing the Web. Some service providers also recognize that the way to demonstrate business partnership with IT is to rise above the plane of pure transport, and support end-level application service level agreements, across the globe. This progress may seem modest for a 10-year timeframe, but it is both real and positive. In this article, authors are going to examine some of the current trends in IT management of applications across the network, and clarify some of the technology tradeoffs among the different products. The article looks at some of the core organizational and technology challenges that are helping to define these trends.
