This article presents information on the Bubble Jeti990 desktop photo printer from Canon. This model introduces what it calls ChromaPLUS technology that among other things has a new red ink for extra vivacity. ChromaPLUS technology's inks are the new red plus cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta and black, each in an individually replaceable tank. Saturation has been increased by up to 60% to more closely match the colour characteristics of positive photographic film. At 1/6 density, the light inks apparently have the lightest density of any on the market, giving the Bubble Jet i990 extremely smooth tonal gradation. All inks are dye-based, resulting in vivid colours and high contrast output. Some printers use a mix of small and large droplet sizes to overcome speed limitations but the Bubble Jet i990 sticks to 2 picolitre droplets. These are produced by Micro-Nozzles measuring just 10 microns in diameter fired at the paper with consistent precision to eliminate even the subtlest traces of sandy textures from prints. The print head has a remarkable high nozzle density, capable of ejecting more than 100 million 2 picolitre droplets per second. The head is not a component assembly as such, rather it uses a photolithographic technique similar to that used in semiconductor manufacture.
