The way to get IT right

This article discusses the guidelines for the success of information technology (IT) initiatives. The truth is that it is almost impossible for an IT initiative to succeed unless the business unit and the IT unit are not merely working in close harmony together but are actively motivated to collaborate and to adopt an approach that is conspiratorial in the most positive sense. What is needed, ideally, is a situation where the business unit is regarded by the IT department as a customer, with the IT department adopting a customer-focused approach to the business unit. Once this approach is in place, the chances of an IT initiative being launched for the wrong reasons are vastly reduced. The initial step taken in an IT initiative is to create a genuine and constructive partnership between the business unit and the IT unit. This is essential if the two parties are to collaborate successfully. The next step is to devise a clear specification for the aims, targets and rationale of the initiative and make sure that everyone involved in the project understands the specification and subscribes to it. An organisation should always consider undertaking a proof of concept project or prototype project before it embarks on a major initiative. Only when the technical design has been tested in a pilot project can the real depth of complexity be understood and the likelihood of success ascertained.
