ABSTRACT
Research and development in the chemical processing of silk fabrics is confined to China, Japan, Italy and India. The degumming of silk has been carried out under alkaline conditions. Silk is generally dyed with acid and metal complex dyes. Acid dyes based on alpha amino benzene derivatives are considered potential carcinogens and are banned in many countries. The use of reactive dyes have increased since they give bright shades with good wash fastness. All types of reactive dyes can be applied on silk.
