The majority of oesophageal adenocarcinoma arises from Barrett's metaplasia (BM) following a metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence. E-cadherin expression is down regulated along this progression, and TNF alpha expression is increased. This article cites a study conducted to investigate the modulation of E-cadherin mRNA by TNF alpha in an ex vivo tissue culture model. Results of the study fail to show a significant modulation of E- cadherin mRNA expression by TNF alpha in an ex vivo model. However, the role of TNF alpha in BM remains elusive and may not be due to alteration of cell to cell adhesion.

E-cadherin is a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed predominantly by epithelial cells. Reduction or loss of E-cadherin immunoreactivity has been associated with tumour progression in many epithelial cancers, including bladder carcinomas. The fibroblast growth factor receptor 2b (FGFR2b)...

Background: Rab proteins constitute a large family of monomeric GTP-binding proteins that regulate intracellular vesicle transport. Several Rab proteins, including rab31, have been shown to affect cancer progression and are related with prognosis in various types of cancer including breast...

Background: Liver metastasis of colorectal malignancies is an important prognostic factor. Several studies have demonstrated that carbon dioxide (CO2) pneumoperitoneum enhances liver metastasis in animal models. Little is known about intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and tumor necrosis...

Background: The prognosis of most hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients is poor due to the high metastatic rate of the disease. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying HCC metastasis is extremely urgent. The role of CD24 and NDRG2 (N-myc downstream-regulated gene 2), a candidate...

Background: Podocalyxin-like 1 (PODXL) is a cell-adhesion glycoprotein and stem cell marker that has been associated with an aggressive tumour phenotype and adverse outcome in several cancer types. We recently demonstrated that overexpression of PODXL is an independent factor of poor prognosis...
