ABSTRACT
The article studies adsorptive granulocyte and monocyte apheresis (GMA) versus prednisolone in patients with corticosteroid dependent ulcerative colitis (UC). The clinical efficacy GMA was evaluated with the view to reduce steroid dose in steroid dependent patients. The study suggested that leucocytes produce cytokines that can initiate and perpetuate inflammatory diseases and therefore, should be the logical targets of therapy of active UC. Accordingly, GMA appeared to be an effective adjunct to standard drug therapy of active UC by promoting remission and suppressing relapse during steroid tapering.
