ABSTRACT
Whether ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) slows the progression of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is uncertain according to two meta-analyses. However the randomised trials evaluated have only a median of 24 months follow up. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential long term effect of UDCA in PBC. Long term treatment with UDCA did not alter disease progression in PBC patients despite a significant improvement in serum bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase consistent with and similar to those seen in UDCA cohorts in randomised trials.
