ABSTRACT
Many patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are convinced they have some form of food allergy or intolerance and have usually tried a dietary approach to their problem. Immunoglobulin (IgG) E mediated food hypersensitivity does not appear to be commonly associated with symptoms of IBS, but little attention has been paid to the potential role of IgG food antibodies in this condition. The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic potential of dietary elimination, based on the presence of IgG antibodies to foods in patients with lBS. A clinically significant improvement can be achieved in some patients with lBS using an elimination diet based on the presence of lgG antibodies to food. The number needed to treat in patients fully adhering to this antibody based diet is in the range of 2.5-3.
