ABSTRACT
Now that Francis Ferko and his lawsuit are behind NASCAR, automobile racing can move on. Time is money, and in the case of NASCAR, International Speedway MB Corp. and Speedway Motorsports, Inc., their money will be better spent investing in new venues and improving existing racetracks than on legal fees. Fortunately, the parties agreed on a settlement. NASCAR clearly has outgrown its southern roots. To expand its audience — both on TV and at the track — NASCAR must explore new and larger markets. The choice to showcase the Nextel Cup series before 155,000 fans at Texas Motor Speedway in the seventh-largest TV market rather than at a partially filled venue that seats 60,000 90 minutes outside of the 29th-largest market was a no-brainer.
