ABSTRACT
The article focuses on a study that explores percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) instead of bypass surgery for high risk patient. As a consequence of two important developments, firstly the expanding scope of percutaneous coronary intervention and secondly the introduction of national individualized audit of cardiac surgical mortality, patients evaluated as very high risk for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are increasingly being treated by PCI. PCI rather than CABG for the great majority of patients requiring revascularisation results in favourable in-hospital outcome.
