ABSTRACT
Professor Leszek Kolakowski, most eminent contemporary Polish philosopher, was born on October 23, 1927 in Radom in an intelligentsia family. His father Jerzy Kolakowski, the grandson of an insurgent of 1863, who was connected with the "Abramowski" association of anarcho-co-operativists propagating the idea of the "co-operativation" of society and the appropriation of all the prerogatives of the state, brought up his son in an atmosphere of progressiveness and free-thinking. During the Nazi occupation Leszek Kolakowski graduated from a clandestine secondary school, and after the war he passed examinations as an extramural student.
