This section presents an update on issues related to the financial planning sector in the U.S. as of May 2004. An Associated Press article noted that 150,000 to 200,000 U.S. tax returns--for individuals, U.S. expatriates and corporations--will be prepared in 2004 by accountants in India for large and modest-size U.S. financial services firms. Only 20,000 were done in 2003 and 1,000 in 2002. One CFP professional has made the Guinness World Records. Christopher Kimball, a CFP practitioner in Lakewood, Washington, organized 500 drummers to gather for Woodstick 2004 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma and in unison play over five minutes of a song he wrote, Break It Again, Sam. This shattered the old Guinness drum-playing record of 264 drummers, set in 2003 in Tacoma, Washington. Kimball, who once played with rock, jazz and gospel bands around the country, got to play with several celebrity drummers onstage. As of January 5, 2004, all financial planners in Malaysia must be either a CFP certificant or a ChFC in order to be licensed. They also must belong to their respective membership organizations: either the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia or the Malaysian Association of Chartered Financial Consultants.
