When linezolid was first approved for use in the United States in the spring of 2000, it was the first oral and parenteral antimicrobial agent to receive indications for the treatment of both infection with vancomycin-resistant enterococci and infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Among clinicians, there were concerns about this compound from the time it became available regarding its bacteriostatic nature, early reports of the development of resistance, its high acquisition costs, and its hematologic toxicity-principally thrombocytopenia.
