This article presents a narrative from reporter Ann Simmons, who was wounded during a coverage of the war in Iraq. At the end of 2003, Simmons was sent on an assignment to Iraq to assist with the Los Angeles Times' coverage of the crisis in the country. She was the victim of a suicide bomb attack outside a restaurant in Baghdad on New Year's Eve. Eight people were killed in the bombing and several Iraqis and the newspaper's staff were injured. Simmons was eventually flown to Basra in southern Iraq, then evacuated to Great Britain by the British Royal Air Force.
