ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the management of the migration of Internet protocol virtual private network (IP-VPN) services. Local exchange carriers are improving their multiservice edges and their performance and management capabilities to attract IP-VPN services with the idea that customers will find it easier to trust the services to carry mission critical data and voice traffic if they can see how well these services are performing. Low cost, ease of management, and short installation timer frame are the top three reasons why customers selected their current network-based VPN services, but that is not exactly what the carriers are offering with the new managed IP-VPN services. Rather than displacing enterprise time frame relay and private line networks, IP-VPN will simply have their own niche and grow gradually.
